Instilling A Responsible Attitude In Spending

Allah s.w.t. reminds us countless times in the Quran that the wealth that we owned, the income that we earned and the fortune that we have accumulated do not actually belong to us.

The wealth owned by anyone is actually owned by Allah s.w.t. It is a blessing given from Allah s.w.t. to His servants as a wasilah or a medium for one to fulfill one’s duties as a khalifah or vicegerent of Allah in this world, and thus, accumulating wealth should not be one’s life’s objective. At the same time, the wealth bestowed upon us is also a test, whether a person will spend the wealth in ways that will gain Allah’s pleasures.

Rasulullah s.a.w. is the perfect role model for us to emulate. If we study the Sunnah of the Prophet s.a.w. related to eating, we will learn that Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. enjoyed nutritious food and drinks, and also maintained a balanced diet throughout his life.

It is something normal that when one has been blessed with more rizk (sustenance), then it is easy for one to give to those who are in need. Indeed it is something that we see very often. However, when one is in a situation where one is in need yet puts the needs of someone else above oneself, then that is indeed a rare sight.

The sense of belonging to one another and because of humanity, we are moved by what is happening to the people of Palestine in Gaza, who have come under incessant attacks and face massive destruction over the past month. As a concerned person, we should reject any form of oppression toward anyone in this world, regardless of their race or religion.
