» Purpose for the Latest Change in 2009

  •  The need to support mosque-upgrading and redevelopment projects

Mosques built with the Mosque Building & Mendaki Fund (MBMF mosques) between 1977 and 1994, and non-MBMF mosques built before 1977 or rebuilt or upgraded before 1990 have experienced physical aging due to wear and tear. Part of the fund allocated to mosque-building, is therefore, channelled to support mosque upgrading or redevelopment projects. Such projects will enable older mosques to cater to the demographic changes in the community and accommodate expanded functions.

  •  The need to support religious education

The new MBMF component – Religious Education – will be used to support the current and future religious education needs of the Muslim community.  The immediate focus is expected to be on upgrading full-time madrasah education, especially on the teaching of academic subjects. This will help to build the capacity of teachers and instructors, and enhance part-time religious education.

  • The need to strengthen and uplift families

Contributions to the Mendaki component were also revised to support key efforts under the Community Leaders Forum’s Action Plan to strengthen Muslim families. The Mendaki component of the MBMF could be used to expand existing programmes which have been shown to be effective and are much needed by the community, as well as to build the capacity of staff and volunteers working with the Malay/Muslim community.
