Introduction to Zakat by Giro
Zakat by Giro is a new mode of Zakat payment. It is an advance monthly payment for your next year's Zakat, allowing you to plan your Zakat on Savings, Business, Gold and Long-term Assets in CPF Ordinary A/C, Investment Shares and Insurance.
Fatwa on Zakat by Giro
The Fatwa Committee has issued the permissibility of Zakat payment by Giro.
It is based on the concept of wakalah, an agent i.e. a bank deducting on behalf of Zakat payer based on the instructed Zakat amount. The Zakat payer must be of sound mind with sufficient bank balance for deduction.
This advance payment does not contradict with the concept of haul(period) as Zakat can be made in advance. A Hadith as narrated by Abu Daud, Tarmizi and Ibnu Majah:
"Sayuduna Abbas r.a. once asked the Messenger of Allah p.b.u.h. on the possibility of paying zakat before its haul (time of obligation) and the Messenger of Allah p.b.u.h. acknowledged it."
