The Aidilfitri Khutbah received positive feedback via the Malay media, which had published excerpts from the khutbahs entitled ‘Morals and Community’ as well as ‘God-consciousness in Marriage’.

Special khutbahs were also prepared for a bone marrow donation drive and the Kosovo Donation in April. English khutbahs were also introduced at 21 mosques from June to August. Eleven khatibs delivered the English khutbahs. Jamal Green of Headwork Educational and Training Services conducted the English Khutbah Translator’s Workshop in September. The English Khutbah Khatib Workshop followed the Trans-lator’s Workshop.

TAHFIZ The Tahfiz Al-Quran Centre was officially opened at Masjid Kampong Siglap. The year also saw MUIS awarding scholarships to two tahfiz students who are currently studying in Malaysia. Another 25 scholarships were given to selected students who enrolled at the MUIS Tahfiz Al-Quran programme at Masjid Kampong Siglap. The programme attracted 250 applicants. In addition, the Tahfiz Al-Quran Cen-tre’s web page was launched on 30 July.

MUIS also cleared the air on the difference between salat and zakat. Advice on donation appeals during the month of Ramadan was also readily given.

MABIMS An active participant in regional and international Islamic forums, MUIS was involved in nine meetings with MABIMS member countries in 1999. Such gatherings promote better ties with the international community as well as provide an avenue for the healthy exchange of ideas.
