The Aidilfitri Khutbah received
positive feedback via the Malay media, which had published excerpts from the
khutbahs entitled ‘Morals and Community’ as well as ‘God-consciousness in Marriage’.
Special khutbahs were also prepared for a bone marrow donation drive and the Kosovo
Donation in April. English khutbahs were also introduced at 21 mosques from June to
August. Eleven khatibs delivered the English khutbahs. Jamal Green of Headwork
Educational and Training Services conducted the English Khutbah Translator’s Workshop
in September. The English Khutbah Khatib Workshop followed the Trans-lator’s Workshop.
TAHFIZ
The Tahfiz Al-Quran Centre was officially opened at Masjid Kampong Siglap. The year
also saw MUIS awarding scholarships to two tahfiz students who are currently studying
in Malaysia. Another 25 scholarships were given to selected students who enrolled at
the MUIS Tahfiz Al-Quran programme at Masjid Kampong Siglap. The programme attracted
250 applicants. In addition, the Tahfiz Al-Quran Cen-tre’s web page was launched on
30 July.
MUIS also cleared the air on the difference between salat and zakat. Advice on
donation appeals during the month of Ramadan was also readily given.
MABIMS
An active participant in regional and international Islamic forums, MUIS was
involved in nine meetings with MABIMS member countries in 1999. Such gatherings
promote better ties with the international community as well as provide an avenue
for the healthy exchange of ideas.
