With the launch of the wakaf awareness campaign, coupled with more powers in managing
and monitoring wakaf, MUIS is expected to play a more effective role in this sphere.
The wakaf awareness campaign was aimed at educating the public on wakaf matters and
MUIS’ role in administering wakaf.
Zakat and Fitrah collection
For the first time, MUIS had bridged the $10 million mark to achieve $11.5 million
in zakat harta and fitrah collection. This substantial improvement allowed us to
distribute and increase the number of recipients among the fakir miskin group, as well
as disburse $2.3 million to the organisations.
Zakat talks and advertisements continued to be prominent during Ramadan. In December,
a telepoll for payment of zakat fitrah was introduced, allowing for the payment of
zakat fitrah via telephones. Zakat harta collection centres have increased in numbers.
There are now 60 collection centres compared to the initial humble 28 when zakat harta
collection first began. These moves aim to reach out to more among the Muslim public
with regards to zakat payment.
Faraid
A series of public education activities on the impor tance of distribution of a
deceased Muslim’s estate according to Islamic Law was organised. ‘Harta dan Faraid’,
an article written by the Syariah Court President, was published in Warita Kita
and a special khutbah on Faraid delivered in 72 mosques.
Financially speaking
Under the tough economic conditions prevailing in 1999, MUIS’ major fund port-folios
showed a decline in collection except for zakat. Baitumal’s collection fell from $4.9
million to $3.8 million, a decrease of 22%. MBF collection decreased from $7.2 million
to $7.09 million, a contraction of 2.8%. Dana Madrasah also dropped 12.6% in collection.
Zakat collection, however, increased from $8.9 million to $11.1 million, an increase
of 24%.
Asset-wise, MUIS invested a total of $14.9 million through Dana Pembangunan, compared
to $10.7 million previously. This is an increase of 39%.
