The history of Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah and its
contributions to the Muslim community goes back to
1927 when it was founded by Al-Marhum Syed Abdul
Rahman bin Junied Aljunied, the grandson of one of the
Muslim pioneers of modern Singapore, Al-Marhum Syed
Omar bin Syed Ali Aljunied. One of the main reasons for
the setting up of the Madrasah was to provide Islamic
education for the Muslims and to produce ulama', many
of whom are now in leadership positions not just in
Singapore, but also in Malaysia and Brunei. Alhamdulillah.
Now, the madrasah is facing a new challenge and the
community must respond positively to ensure the
madrasah's continued existence and success in its
position and role. Affected by Singapore's urban
redevelopment programme in 1991, the waqaf land, on
which the madrasah land was built, was acquired by the
government. The government however has agreed and
approved in December 1995 to lease MUIS, a site
5,200 sq m. in area, within the same vicinity, for the
redevelopment of madrasah.
Reasonable progress has been achieved by Madrasah
Aljunied Redevelopment Committee in its effort to make
the redevelopment of the madrasah a success. The
building plan is ready, the piling begins in September
this year and the new madrasah is expected to be ready
in March 1998. The cost of the whole project is estimated
to be about S$12 million, and to date only S$4.5 million
has been raised and S$7.5 million more is needed.
The community must therefore rise to the occasion,
answer the call of the madrasah and positively help to
raise the S$7.5 million or maybe more. By doing so the
community would fulfilling its responsibility of
supporting the redevelopment of Madrasah Aljunied and
thus ensuring that there would always be asatizah and
ulama', able and willing to contribute to the community
through the 21st century.
