Know how to avoid major causes of injury

We have discussed the ways we prepare in advance of our trip to help insure that the Hajj is a safe and healthy experience. Now we turn to those things we need to know and do During the Hajj. Our focus will be on prevention of disease and injury, protection of those with special needs, and knowledge of basic first aid and crowd safety techniques. Here’s an overview:
• ALWAYS wash your hands with soap and water after urinating or defecating and before eating.

• Make sure you drink clean water and dispose of trash, waste, and hazardous materials appropriately.

• Use sun protection such as sunscreen lotion and umbrella.

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration.

• Eat a nutritious and sensible diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

• Remember to use your medication as needed, especially if you are on prescribed medicine for a chronic health condition.

• Sleep and rest well because you will need all the rest in preparation for performing the manasik the following day.

• Be informed and organized to minimize stress. Make sure that you know the schedule of activities for the next day so that you are prepared.

• Protect children, frail, elderly, and handicapped. Do not expose them unnecessarily to crowds, heat, sun, and hardships.

• If pregnant, eat a healthy diet, drink lots of fluids and rest. Pregnant women should refrain from going to the Hajj for reason that will be detailed later, however, should they choose to go, they will need to pay special attention to their diet, avoid becoming dehydrated and rest as much as possible.

• Know basic First Aid techniques. This will be detailed later.

• Know the three main causes of injury during the Hajj and how to avoid them.
