Background of the Mosque Building and Mendaki Fund (MBMF)
The Mosque Building Fund was first introduced in 1975. Its objective was to provide funds for the mosque building programme in Singapore. The Mosque Building Fund was integrated with the Mendaki Fund after the formation of the Mendaki Foundation in 1984. It became known as Mosque Building & Mendaki Fund (MBMF).
MBMF contribution is deducted from employees’ salaries through a CPF check off scheme, on an opt-out basis. When it was first established, every Muslim worker was required to contribute 50 cents per month. Because of increasing costs in developing and building mosques, the MBMF contribution rate was revised in November 1995 and July 2005. Bearing in mind employees’ needs, MBMF rates were set based on their monthly income. In addition, Muslim employees are encouraged to make greater voluntary contributions.
