091120 - Contextualising Muslim Family Law in Practice

Trainer: Ustazah Nur Hafiza Roslee and Ustazah Nurhannah Irwan, Office of the Mufti (Research)

Date: Monday, 09 November 2020

Time: 10:00 AM  -  1:00 PM

Venue: Online

CPE: 3

Synopsis:This module seeks to study the position and role of men and women as denoted in the Quran and hadiths, and how the different interpretations has then informed the understanding of gender dynamics in classical Islamic traditions. It will then critically analyse the key concepts and ideas in Muslim family law, by studying the diverse scholarly discussions (both classical and contemporary) on the Quranic verses and the relevant Prophetic narrations, and how these differences are instrumental in influencing the varied outcomes of the implementation of Muslim family law. Some of these key concepts that we will be discussing include the interpretations of qiwama and nushuuz. The module thus hopes to provide the asatizah with the platform and tools needed to start critically reflecting on the interpretations of Muslim family law, and to better appreciate the role of context and cultural norms in influencing and informing one's interpretations and approaches to texts and traditions - specifically in the context of gender dynamics and Muslim family law.
