Time: 10:00 AM  -  5:30 PM

CPE: 7

Synopsis:Fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence has always been an integral part of Muslim religious life. It provides a bridge towards understanding God’s Will and a method of practicing Islam according to His Will. At the core of this legal enterprise is the establishment of the shar‘ia or Divine Law. This shar‘ia consists of transcendental moral codes such as justice and compassion, which are then translated into ahkam or legal rulings via a process of tashri‘ or law-making. This whole enterprise is called fiqh, which is a human attempt to enact laws in accordance with the shari’a. Unfortunately today, shar‘ia is associated with stoning and hand chopping. What caused this shift in thinking?

This session will explain
(a) the development of shar‘ia and its difference with fiqh;
(b) How did Islamic Law work in the past and how did it adapt to social change?
(c) Diverse Manifestation of Islamic Law in Muslim life today.
