700 more families are set to receive monthly financial help from Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) under its zakat assistance programme. This is made possible after a revision made to the eligibility criteria for zakat financial assistance. From 1 September 2018, Muis will increase the eligibility criteria from a household PCI (Per Capita Income) of $350 currently, to a PCI of $400. This was announced by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli at the Muis’ Ramadan Disbursement Ceremony and Iftar (breaking of fast) on Friday, 8 June 2018.
In his speech, Mr Masagos shared that Muis is setting aside $2.3 million for this year’s Ramadan Bonus disbursement, an increase of 23.5% from last year. This disbursement will benefit 4,300 families and 2,050 individuals, which include families on Muis’ monthly assistance, residence of welfare homes, as well as Muslim recipients of ComCare Long Term Assistance. Each recipient will receive between $150 to as much as $1,000, depending on the family size. This year’s bonus will also be extended to 100 additional needy families who have been recommended by Family Service Centres all over Singapore.
Muis conducts regular reviews of quantum of monthly financial assistance as well as the PCI to determine eligibility for zakat. Head of Muis’ Social Development Strategic Unit Ms Muzaiyanah Hamzah said:
“We are very mindful of the fact that if you look at inflation, the cost of living and also the stagnation of income, we would like to be able to supplement some of this gap and to ensure that the low income families get the additional support that the need.”
At this year’s Rahmah Ramadan, Muis played host to about 200 guests from 27 welfare homes and institutions, keeping with the tradition of sharing the blessings of Ramadan. The welfare homes were presented with special mementos in the form of artwork produced by artists from the Rainbow Centres, Casa Raudha Women Home and Pertapis (Pertapis Seniors Fellowship Home and Pertapis Kiddy Campus). These mementos are sponsored by staff of Muis as part of its Community Service Programme. The total amount raised for the artwork is $15,000, which will be distributed equally to the three beneficiaries.
