Culturally Appropriate Counselling Skills

This module aims to provide knowledge and techniques for building relationship and intervening therapeutically in direct social work practice. Students are facilitated to learn and build on their self-reflections and awareness in relation to working with their clients in the different contexts. The module focuses on the application of knowledge and skills to the context of Singapore.

Tertiary education in Counselling/Social Work or equivalent. Minimally one year of teaching experience in higher education or two years professional experience in the social work/social services field or equivalent. Effective oral and written communication skills in English.

Introduction to Psychology

Jan - Mar (2 tutorial sessions of 3 hours each)

Oct - Nov

The course is designed to equip students who are not planning to major in psychology with basic literacy in the discipline. Students will acquire basic understanding of common human experiences, such as the self, learning, and memory from a psychological perspective, developmental processes, and psychological disorders; and apply psychological knowledge to understand some of the common problematic behaviours we encounter, such as forgetfulness, anxiety-related disorders, and depression. Students will also learn about some of the practical issues, such as whether it is beneficial to boost one’s self-esteem, how we learn, and how we can help shape future generations.

Tertiary education in Psychology with minimally one year of teaching experience in higher education or equivalent. Effective oral and written communication skills in English.

Understanding Our Social World

May - Jul (3 tutorial sessions of 2 hours each)

Social Sciences provide ways to understand human interactions in their respective social worlds. This module is an introduction to how social scientists study societies. Students will have an introduction, overview approaches and methodologies in the social sciences as well as the different social scientific methodologies to produce and analyse data. Through themes including family institutions, stratification and class structure, gender and social change, students will be exposed to some thinkers and theorists in the social sciences and learn about their corresponding ideas, approaches and research methods.

Tertiary education in Social Science with minimally one year of teaching experience in higher education or equivalent. Background in Islamic Theology/ Islamic Sciences will be an added advantage. Familiarity with local social issues and current affairs. Effective oral and written communication skills in English. Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents are preferred as the module focuses on the application of knowledge and skills to the context of Singapore.

Southeast Asian Islam in Historical and Sociological Perspectives

Aug - Nov (3 tutorial sessions of 2 hours each)

This module uses the socio-historical approach to examine the religious life of the Malays in Southeast Asia. It begins by discussing the dynamics of Islamisation in the region since the 14th century and considers different varieties of religious thought and their influence on Malay culture and institutions. The impact of colonialism in the 19th century and its approach to the administration of Islam will then be examined. This will be followed by an analysis of the work of relevant thinkers on issues of religion and reform, aimed at alleviating problems in the community. A critical analysis of the socio-historical meaning of the resurgence of Islam in the post-Independence era and its response to the demands of modernity and social, political and economic change will also be undertaken. Students will be introduced to major strands of religious experience in the region today and the extent to which they are able to strengthen and facilitate the community’s development and its adaptation to the modern world.

Tertiary education in Social Science/History with minimally one year of teaching experience in higher education or equivalent. Effective oral and written communication skills in English and Malay. Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents are preferred as the module focuses on the application of knowledge and skills to the context of Singapore.

Tier 1 Asatizah Recognition Scheme (ARS) certified will be an advantage. Experience supervising academic and non-academic projects at tertiary levels will be an added advantage. Familiarity with local socio-religious landscape, social issues and current affairs. Interest in coaching and mentoring students will be an advantage. Effective oral and written communication skills in English. Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents are preferred as the module focuses on the application of knowledge and skills to the context of Singapore.
