Abstract of the lecture:

With the rise of nationalism, populism, and radical Islamic Groups, both globalization and Islam are facing a strong wave resistance. There is increasing tension between a peaceful integrated global world and guarded exclusive orders that are strengthened by explosive divides. The current challenges offer an opportunity to reassess how the inclusive values of globalization and Islam are dynamic and resilient and how they can continue to present insights and inform, both for citizens and leaders on identity politics, governance as well as harmonious living in public and global life.

In this lecture, Professor Dr Jonathan Brown will focus on how Prophet Muhammad’s universal inclusive thought and his compassionate leadership can address the perennial questions of diversity, today. He will highlight the contribution of the interdependence of diverse cultures, thought and practices on social transformation and progress. Drawing on the Islamic heritage, Dr Brown will explore the possibilities to both honour and integrate the best values and principles of the different cultures and traditions for the common good, without compromising their distinctive and essential features that define their character and identity. Such a sensitive balance is achievable, for instance, although, Singapore is, the most diverse nation, racially and religious according to the Pew Research today, yet Singaporeans ceaselessly strive to collectively participate in shaping local discourses on ethics and morality, gender issues, social welfare and economics, while honouring the independent core beliefs of their respective worldviews.
