The inaugural series of the Fatwa Lab featured a cohort of 17 researchers from diverse educational backgrounds. These researchers focused on four key emerging areas:

1. Food technology: Cultivated meat and Maqāṣid Sharīʻah: Maṣlaḥah-Mafsadah assessment

Mentor: Ustazah Nur Khadijah Binte Ramli
Ustazah Nur Khadijah Binte Ramli is an experienced educator specialising in Islamic studies and early childhood education. She holds a BA in Islamic Belief and Philosophy from Al-Azhar University and a Specialist Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Nanyang Institute of Management.
With over 10 years of teaching experience in Singapore and Brunei, she is also a qualified religious teacher for adults and children. She is also currently pursuing a Master's in Usuluddin at the University of Sultan Shariff Ali.

Mentor: Ustaz Dr. Badrul Fata Bin Muhd Ridwan
Ustaz Dr. Badrul Fata Bin Muhd Ridwan, a Fatwa Committee member, is a lecturer at Al-Zuhri Institute of Higher Learning, specialising in Arabic Language and fiqh studies. He holds a PhD in Arabic Language Teaching from Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim, Master's degree in Shariah from University of Malaya, and a BA in Islamic Studies and Arabic Language from Al-Azhar University.

Zahratur Rofiqah Binte Mochamad Sandisi
Ustazah Zahratur Rofiqah holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Islamic Jurisprudence from the University of Jordan and is pursuing a PhD in Islamic Theology and Philosophy, researching spirituality and food-soul connections. She lectures at PERGAS and volunteers at a women's shelter, supporting single mothers and their children. Her work combines academic expertise with practical community service.

Zubair Bin Mohd Redza
Ustaz Zubair holds an undergraduate degree in Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences from IIUM, specialising in Arabic Language and Literature with a minor in Quran and Sunnah Studies. After graduation, he spent five years in the mosque sector focusing on fundamental Islamic Education for the community. He now serves as an Educator at Madrasah Alsagoff Al-Arabiah, teaching Arabic and Revealed Knowledge subjects to secondary students.

Syazaa Binte Mohamed Nizam
"Live, Love, Serve" - the motto of this aspiring writer and artist-scientist. She serves inmates, ex-offenders, and their families through FITRAH, finding profound meaning and mutual growth in these connections. Her other "organ of interest" is the brain, which she's exploring on a quest for gems within the field of psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience.
2. Finance: Leveraging on contemporary financial instruments to develop ‘Cash Wakaf’ in Singapore

Mentor: Ustaz Dr. Mohammad Yusri Yubhi Bin Md Yusoff
Ustaz Dr Mohd Yusri is the founder of YusriYusoff Consulting, which focuses on Islamic content and family development consultation services. His areas of interest include Islamic thought, Quranic studies, and family relationship issues. He is also an associate member of the Fatwa Committee and a member of the Appeal Board of MUIS. He earned a PhD in Islamic Thought at IIUM and has served in significant roles as CEO of PERGAS and officer at Office of the Mufti.

Muhammad Haris Bin Affandi
Muhammad Haris Bin Affandi is a Finance and Accounting Executive at Warees Investments with a background in Islamic Jurisprudence from University of Jordan. He has gained a broad range of experience through work stints & internships at the Attorney General’s Chambers, Abdul Rahman Law Corporation, and PERGAS Investment Holdings. As Lead Researcher for MUIS’s Fatwa Lab Project, he authored a paper on Cash Wakaf, which he presented at the Fatwa Conference 2024.

Muhammad Fairuzee Bin Salihudin
Ustaz Muhammad Fairuzee bin Salihudin is an educator and financial advisor with a Bachelor's in Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University. He has over a decade of experience teaching Arabic and Fiqh, currently offering freelance classes at community centres and Darul Arqam. For the past five years, Fairuzee has focused on providing Shariah-aligned financial guidance to the Muslim community, promoting investing and financial literacy to help individuals grow their wealth sustainably.

Ahmad Shahid Mohammad Zamri
With a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Jurisprudence, Shahid is a dedicated financial advisor committed to deliver strategies that align with both personal goals and Shariah law, ensuring financial success without compromising Islamic principles.

Nasiruddin Bin Hussen
Nasiruddin is a Certified Shariah Advisor and Auditor (AAOIFI), with a Master’s in Islamic Finance and a Bachelor’s in Islamic Jurisprudence. He runs Shariah consultancy services through BeShariahWise, assisting the community with Shariah-related financial matters, while actively creating social media content on Islamic finance.
3. Artificial intelligence: Optimising fatwa research with AI: Enhancing efficiency, implementations and challenges

Mentor: Ustazah Dr Siti Nur 'Alaniah Binte Abdul Wahid
Ustazah Dr. Siti Nur 'Alaniah Binte Abdul Wahid, a Fatwa Committee Member, is a freelance lecturer and curriculum developer for various Islamic institutions, including PCICS and PERGAS. She holds a PhD from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia focusing on psychological foundations of madrasah education, an MA in Inter-Disciplinary Islamic Studies from UIN Jakarta, and a BA in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University. She is also actively involved in community rehabilitation and educational development programs. She is also the honorary secretary of PERGAS, member of LBKM and a resource person for Asatizah Solace Care.

Ahmad Khalil bin Mohamed Rafii
Ahmad Khalil graduated from Kuwait University specialising in Comparative Jurisprudence. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Analytics and Data Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He aims to apply AI to Islamic texts, bridging traditional scholarship and modern technology. His work explores the intersection of Islamic studies and artificial intelligence.

Nurhani Binte Rehan
Nurhani Rehan holds a first-class honours degree in Arabic for International Communications. Her work involves translation of texts in Arabic and English, designing educational programmes, and teaching Arabic language.

Ahmad Nu'man Bin Muhammad Fuad
Ahmad Nu’man studied at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah and holds degrees from Al-Azhar University and the University of Birmingham. He has worked with Ascent Islamic for five years, while also teaching part-time and pursuing an executive master’s in Islamic finance at INCEIF.

Siti Zainab Binte Jefry
Zainab is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology and Criminology with a background in Arabic Language and Literature from Jordan. She is passionate about exploring the psychological factors that influence criminal behaviour and the impact of religious factors on individual development.
4. Medical technology: Religious guidance for Singaporean Muslims to prenatal screening based on the Duke-NUS carrier screening project

Mentor: Ustaz Dr Mohammad Rizhan Bin Leman
Mohammad Rizhan Bin Leman completed his pre-university studies at Tampines Junior College. He attained his first degree in Shariah from the Islamic University of Madinah. He continued his Masters in the field of Comparative Law at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He graduated from the International Islamic University Malaysia with a Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Heritage (Fiqh and Usul Fiqh). He is currently a freelance educator and an associate member of the Fatwa Committee in Singapore.

Husna Azzakiyah Binte Muhammad Haniff
Husna Azzakiyah holds a Bachelor's degree (Hons) in Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She enjoys interdisciplinary research on contemporary Fiqh issues, examining their causes, religious considerations, and exploring community-focused solutions. She was recently tasked to lead a Fatwa Lab group researching on the Islamic perspective of carrier screening for genetic diseases.

Amirah Afiqah Binte Idilfitri
Amirah Afiqah, an ustazah at Syamail Madinah Academy, also works as a special education teacher in a private autism centre. She holds an Usuluddin degree from Al-Azhar University (2021) and a specialist diploma in special needs education from ACC Institute (2023). Her research focuses on children's holistic development, particularly improving her students' quality of life.

Huzhaifah Kamal
Ustaz Huzhaifah Kamal is currently an MSc student at INCEIF pursuing Islamic Finance. He holds a BA in Islamic Jurisprudence from the University of Jordan, and a BSc in Accounting and Finance from the University of London. His research experience spans across Islamic finance, Maqasid theory, takaful and Islamic law.
Muhammad Shazani Bin Shamsudin
Muhammad Shazani is an aspiring researcher who is passionate about providing answers, guidance and solutions to real world challenges. He is equiped with five years of experience teaching and writing Islamic content, with strong interest in contemporary issues like sectarianism, moral ethics, philosophy, and deviant teachings.
Research area
1. Food technology
This research investigates the permissibility and ethical considerations of cultivated meat from an Islamic perspective. It explores the potential benefits of this emerging technology while critically examining the diverse challenges associated with its development and regulation. By comprehensively analysing both the scientific and religious dimensions of cultivated meat, this research aims to provide valuable insights for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers.

2. Finance
This research seeks to explore innovative financial instruments and strategies that can optimise the utilisation of Cash Wakaf for community development within Singapore's existing wakaf ecosystem. By examining the religious legitimacy and scholarly consensus surrounding the establishment of Cash Wakaf, this study aims to align Islamic financial and investment principles with contemporary practices. This analysis will provide valuable insights for expanding the scope and impact of Cash Wakaf initiatives.

3. Artificial intelligence
This research investigates the potential applications of AI technologies in fatwa research. By leveraging AI-driven methods such as prompt tuning and utilising bots for information extraction and analysis, this study aims to enhance the accuracy, speed, and depth of fatwa research. Additionally, the research addresses potential challenges and ethical considerations associated with AI integration, proposing strategies for its responsible and effective use in the field of Islamic jurisprudence.

4. Medical technology
This research investigates the effective implementation of a value-based approach to customised carrier screening within the context of Islamic family planning. By examining ethical considerations and aligning screening practices with Shariah principles, this study aims to provide guidance for Muslim couples in making informed family planning decisions. Additionally, the research explores the potential future implications of similar screenings and reproductive options within the framework of Islamic law, developing appropriate frameworks to support Muslim couples in navigating these evolving realities.
