H1N1 (English)

As citizens of a cosmopolitan city like Singapore, unlimited interaction with the global community results in various challenges. This includes the exposure to and spread of infectious viruses such as the H1N1.

Latest reports show that Singapore is currently experiencing the third wave of the spread of the H1N1 virus in the country. The virus continues to spread and there has been an increase in the number of those infected locally.

In facing challenges such as this, Muslims in Singapore have an important role to play in preventing the spread of this virus. We should take every possible proactive and preventive measure to avoid infection and infecting others.

Islam teaches us to always ensure personal hygiene, as it is a manifestation of one’s faith. Hence, we should practice a hygienic lifestyle, and continuously monitoring our health conditions. Islam also teaches us to prioritise the safety and welfare of the general public. Close co-operation is needed within the community in continuing to maintain good public health as part of our social responsibility.

It is necessary for those who are not feeling well due to an infectious disease to seek medical treatment immediately and refrain from coming in contact with other people. Avoiding public spaces - including mosques - when you are not well or are still undergoing treatment is also crucial because of the possibility of infecting others and worsening one’s own condition.

At the same time, continuous supplication to Allah s.w.t. has to be made; to grant us safety, prosperity and good health.
