MUIS and mosques step up support for Muslim migrant workers

MUIS and mosques, with the support of the community, pool funds to provide meals for Muslim migrant workers in last 15 days of Ramadan, 3,500 new prayer mats.

1. Some 300 Muslim migrant workers residing in a factory-converted dormitory at Kian Teck Drive received prayers mats and Ramadan care packs containing dates and milk, as the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM) ramp up efforts to ensure the welfare of workers, many of whom are Muslims. Minister of State, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Manpower, Mr Zaqy Mohamad and Deputy Mufti, MUIS, Dr Mohammad Hannan Hassan were present for the distribution.

2. Working with the Alliance of Guest Workers Outreach and Masjid Maarof in Jurong West, MUIS distributed a total of 3,500 prayer mats to Muslim migrant workers living in such dormitories across Singapore, since Thursday 7 May. The prayers mats were donated by members of the public and local mosques to MUIS for distribution to affected migrant workers.

3. MUIS and mosques are also partnering Free Food For All and The Food Bank Singapore to provide breaking of fast meals to 1,200 Muslim migrant workers staying in various factory-converted dormitories. The meals will be provided during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

4. MUIS also received a contribution from an anonymous donor who sponsored more than $40,000 to provide an additional five days of breaking of fast meals.

5. The provision of buka puasa meals is a gesture to appreciate the contributions of Muslim migrant workers who played integral role in the mosques, actively volunteering their time for mosques’ activities throughout the year and in Ramadan.

6. Deputy Mufti, Dr Hannan delivered a short message to the migrant workers to provide spiritual support and underscore the importance of adhering to health advisories. He continued to assure them that MUIS has put in place online religious content in their native language on SalamSG TV to ensure that their spiritual needs are met, especially in the month of Ramadan. On the sidelines of his visit, Dr Hannan thanked the community for their concern for fellow migrant workers, and support in partnering MUIS and various other agencies to care for the welfare of Muslim migrant workers. He added, such spirit of charity embodies the significance of Ramadan and reflects the deep value of compassion which is strongly emphasised within the Muslim community as it is in all faith traditions.
