Madrasahs clear 2023 Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) benchmark

1. 335 students out of 338 Singaporean Primary 6 madrasah students (99.1%) have passed their Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) this year. Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) congratulates all students from these madrasahs¹.

Clearance of 2023 PSLE benchmark under the Compulsory Education Act 

2. As such all four madrasahs offering primary education will retain their “designated school” status² under the Compulsory Education (CE) Act for 2023 and will be able to admit children exempted from CE at Primary 1.

3. In the past 5 years, the mean percentage of Primary 6 madrasah students who passed PSLE has been around 99.1%. All four madrasahs have successfully cleared the PSLE benchmark throughout the past decade.

MUIS' interventions to support the full-time madrasahs 

4. MUIS has conducted several projects to enhance the madrasah sector, such as the Centres of Excellence and Collaboration (COEC). Started in 2021, COEC enable madrasahs to focus on a particular area where they could build deeper expertise and offer relevant developmental programmes to the rest of the madrasahs. To date, 5 of our madrasahs lead COECs in various subjects³.

5. To enhance the quality of teaching, teachers without professional qualifications will need to obtain a Specialist Diploma in Teaching and Learning from National Institute of Education (NIE). This comprehensive program will equip them with the latest pedagogical skills and knowledge, ensuring they are well-versed in the ever-evolving landscape of education.

6. Commenting on the performance of our madrasah students, MUIS Chief Executive, Kadir Maideen said: "Students from our Madrasahs who sat for PSLE this year have worked hard and excelled in the studies, and we are proud of their achievements. Madrasahs play a vital role in developing religious scholars, leaders, and educators for our community in a dual curriculum setting. They also preserve our Islamic legacy and heritage by imparting knowledge, tradition, and moral values. The Madrasahs have been able to achieve these goals through the ground-up efforts made by teachers and volunteers as well as the generous contributions of our Muslim community.
