2021 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) performance of madrasah students

1. A total of 352 Singaporean madrasah students sat for the PSLE this year. Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) congratulates all students and madrasahs¹.

2. Out of the 352 Singaporean Primary 6 students who sat for the PSLE this year, 98.8% (348 students) are assessed suitable to proceed to secondary school. This is 0.3% higher compared to 2020. Overall, in the past 5 years the percentage of Primary 6 madrasah students progressing to secondary school has seen a stable trend.

3. Madrasah Wak Tanjong Al-Islamiah (MWTI) has cleared the PSLE benchmark twice in the 3-year block (2020 to 2022) and will now be able to continue to take in students at Primary 1.

Initiatives to improve PSLE results

4. Since January 2021, through the support of MOE, MUIS has facilitated madrasahs in enhancing the quality of teaching of Maths and Science at the primary level by providing guidance to primary madrasah teachers on the teaching pedagogies, and assessment techniques.

5. Additionally, MUIS introduced the Centres of Excellence and Collaboration (COEC) in 2021 where any madrasah could focus on a particular area, build deeper expertise and offer relevant developmental programmes to the rest of the madrasahs.  For example, one of the participating madrasahs, Madrasah Irsyad opted to be a centre for Primary Mathematics and STEM. Since January this year, it has organised various workshops and engagement sessions involving teachers from all madrasahs as well as parents and students. Experts from the National Institute of Education (NIE) as well as Madrasah Irsyad’s own teachers were involved in conducting those sessions.

6. Commenting on the PSLE results MUIS Chief Executive, Kadir Maideen said:

Despite another challenging year, our madrasahs have performed well under the new PSLE scoring system. It has been a tough battle handling COVID-19 and preparing for the exams. However, the madrasah leaders, teachers, students, and parents showed resilience despite the odds. We are proud of the level of cooperation and hard work that were put in by everyone. I would especially thank our madrasah teachers who have worked tirelessly to prepare the students well for PSLE.

MUIS will continue to support and strengthen our madrasahs in the coming years. We urge the Muslim community to continue to support the madrasahs through various ways as they are the community’s key institutions in producing religious leaders for the future.

7. MUIS will continue to extend its PSLE Assistance Package to all full-time madrasahs whose students will be taking the PSLE.  The details of the assistance are attached in the Annex.
