Acting Minister Zaqy sets next direction for MUIS

New senior leadership appointments and AI innovation strengthen community institutions

  1. Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs (Ag Min) and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, reaffirmed the Government's commitment to supporting the continued progress of the Malay/Muslim community, outlining the next phase of MUIS journey, building on strong foundations, renewing leadership and embracing innovation to better serve the community.

Held at the Singapore Islamic Hub, the MUIS National Day Observance Ceremony (NDOC) 2026 brought together MUIS Council members, mosque and madrasah leaders, and MUIS officers under the theme "Go Beyond: Securing Our Shared Future.” The event also commemorated the 60th anniversary of the National Pledge, reaffirming Singapore's shared values of unity, multiculturalism and collective responsibility.

A confident community contributing to Singapore’s future

Reflecting on Singapore's 61st year of independence, Ag Min Zaqy said the Malay/Muslim community has progressed alongside the nation and continues to contribute to Singapore’s future, which has been built on trust, unity and people from different backgrounds working together towards a common purpose. Ag Min Zaqy also reaffirmed the Government's commitment to strengthening religious institutions, supporting families, empowering youths and creating opportunities for every member of the community to succeed.

Strengthening MUIS for the future

  1. In his speech, Ag Min Zaqy welcomed two new appointments to MUIS's senior leadership team. Ms Faizah Ahmad Barazy has been appointed Deputy Chief Executive from 1 August, bringing almost 20 years of experience in policy and stakeholder engagement at the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). Ms Rafidah Suparman will join as Assistant Chief Executive, effective 1 October, bringing more than 30 years of experience in organisational development, strategic communications and risk management from the Singapore Prison Service.

  2. Ms Faizah Ahmad Barazy shared, “I am honoured to join MUIS at this important juncture. Over the years, MUIS has grown into a trusted institution that has served Singapore’s Muslim community with dedication and purpose. I recognise the amanah entrusted to us by the community, and I look forward to working closely with our officers, mosques, madrasahs and community partners to build on these strong foundations, strengthen our institutions, and navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead together. Through our collective efforts, I am confident that MUIS will continue to be a trusted, relevant and responsive institution, serving the evolving needs of our community today and for generations to come.”

  3. Ag Min Zaqy also thanked former Deputy Chief Executive Mr Khairul Anwar for his dedicated service and contributions to the development of MUIS, particularly in strengthening the mosque sector, madrasah education, halal development, and community funds.

Harnessing innovation to serve the community better

  1. Looking ahead, Ag Min Zaqy encouraged the community to harness innovation, including AI to strengthen services for the community. He said AI should help institutions become more responsive and improve service delivery while remaining guided by human judgement and Islamic values. He highlighted initiatives such as IftaSG, which supports fatwa research within Singapore's context, and the Halal Ingredients Verification Bot, demonstrating how technology can enhance services while complementing human judgement. He emphasised that AI should strengthen – not replace – the human touch in serving the community.

MUIS AI Recognition Awards

  1. The ceremony also featured the inaugural MUIS AI Recognition Awards, recognising officers and teams from MUIS, mosques and madrasahs for excellence in applying AI to improve community engagement, strengthen religious services and enhance day-to-day operations. Awards were presented across three categories: Explorer, Champion and Trailblazer.

Celebrating a community confident in its identity

  1. The ceremony concluded with a musical performance by NADI Singapura and Syabab Ensemble, featuring students from Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah, celebrating a confident Muslim community that continues to contribute to Singapore's shared future.
