Leap initiative celebrates 126 families, completing two-year empowerment programme
11 April 2026
126 families complete a two-year empowerment programme that provides milestone-based grants up to $5,000 across six key domains, achieving a 79% retention rate whilst fostering community leadership and peer support.
One hundred and twenty-six (126) families representing 630 individuals celebrated the completion of the Leap Initiative Programme Batch 3 at a graduation ceremony on Saturday, 11 April held at the Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium.
The Leap Initiative is a two-year empowerment programme that provides milestonebased grants of up to $5,000 to help families improve their lives across six key domains: family strengthening, financial literacy, Islamic education, community assets, children and youth, and employment and employability. The programme is fully funded by Zakat monies contributed by the community via MUIS and mosques.
Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Assoc Professor Muhd Faishal Ibrahim, who served as Guest-of-Honour at the ceremony, said: "What truly makes the difference is the resilience, determination, and commitment of each family to improve their lives. The Leap Initiative is more than a grant programme — it empowers families, builds resilience, strengthens bonds, and creates a community where families grow together.
Innovative approach to family empowerment
The programme's unique approach centres on trusting families as the best decisionmakers in navigating their challenges.
Families journal their activities on a mobile application to unlock progressive grants. Leap Batch 3 began in March 2024 with 160 families, with 126 successfully completing the programme—a retention rate of nearly 79%.
Success stories
Several families demonstrated remarkable achievements through the programme.
Mdm Nuraini Ramli successfully supported her daughter Suhaira through PSLE whilst upskilling herself for employment. She enrolled in Temasek Polytechnic's SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme for Patient Service Associates, using grant funds to cover remaining course fees. She is now employed full-time as a dental assistant, while Suhaira has enrolled in her chosen secondary school.
Community engagement and peer support
Beyond financial support, the programme emphasises peer support and community building. Caseworkers organise quarterly engagements, with Leap Batch 3 achieving nine engagements and the highest participation across all three batches.
The programme also encourages youth community service, exemplified by the Leap Youth Give Back event on 28 June 2025 in collaboration with Pertapis Senior Citizens Fellowship Home. Over 30 Leap youths organised activities for 24 seniors, with one participant, Nurul Darwisyah Binte Ramad, reflecting that giving back extends beyond monetary donations—simply lending a hand makes the difference.
Community leadership and giving back
Mentors—families who completed at least 60 hours of journalling—have been vital to Batch 3's success, with the programme now having around 60 mentors, representing a 20% increase from the previous batch. Beyond the programme itself, Leap families actively support wider community initiatives, with 42 families this year contributing $60 Sheng Siong vouchers to 73 MUIS Zakat beneficiaries, personally packing and delivering groceries with personalised cards.
Programme impact
The Leap Initiative demonstrates how empowering families as active decisionmakers creates lasting change that extends beyond individual households to strengthen the broader community. Families strive to thrive.
