Muslim community commemorates Awal Muharram at Al-Ansar Mosque
17 June 2026
At the Awal Muharram 1448H event held on 16 June 2026, Singapore's Mufti Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir called on the Muslim community to strengthen social cohesion, build cross-community relationships, and use technology responsibly, to promote understanding, inclusion and the common good.
About 650 congregants attended the Majlis Fi Rihabi Rahmah event organised by The Office of the Mufti (OOM) in partnership with Al-Ansar Mosque on Tuesday, 16 June 2026. Joining the congregation was Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs, Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim.
Themed “Nurturing Human Dignity through Noble Character”, the programme marked the occasion of Awal Muharram 1448H and brought together mosque congregants in a spirit of community and spiritual reflection. Awal Muharram marks the first day of the Islamic calendar and the beginning of a new Islamic year.
Strengthening social cohesion amid global divisions
Addressing the congregants, Singapore's Mufti, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, called on the Muslim community to renew their collective commitment to preserving Singapore's peace, harmony and social cohesion. At a time of growing division and polarisation worldwide, he urged the community to strengthen relationships across different backgrounds, cultures and faiths, and to respond to contemporary challenges with wisdom, compassion and strong values.
The Mufti also encouraged the community to harness technology — including artificial intelligence and social media — responsibly, to promote understanding, inclusion and the common good. The event featured a forum jointly presented with Deputy Mufti Dr Izal Mustafa Kamar. Together, he affirmed, the community can continue to safeguard Singapore as a peaceful, harmonious and inclusive home for present and future generations.
Started in 2023, Majlis Fi Rihabi Rahmah, or translated as Dalam Tautan Rahmah in Malay, is an annual community initiative by the Office of the Mufti to strengthen bonds between local mosques and the wider community. Held at different mosques throughout the year and aligned with significant Islamic occasions, the programme featured spiritual enrichment through Quran recitation, Zikir, Selawat and Qasidah, alongside Takzirah sessions delivered by respected asatizah. The initiative serves as a key platform to strengthen the Singapore Muslim Identity narrative and to embed attributes of religious resilience, inclusive, contributive, adaptive and progressive within the broader community.
Associate Professor Faishal shared, “Awal Muharram call us to pause, reflect, and renew our commitment to living with purpose and integrity. The theme of nurturing human dignity through noble character speaks to the heart of what it means to be a Muslim in Singapore; contributing meaningfully to our society while remaining grounded in our faith. This also means embracing our role as bridge-builders across communities, engaging thoughtfully with a rapidly changing world so we safeguard Singapore as a peaceful, inclusive home for all. I encourage everyone to carry that spirit of Muharram into their daily lives.”
