Santunan Emas to expand support for seniors through mosque and community partnerships
31 October 2026
Programme strengthens outreach and support for seniors and caregivers through collaborations with NHG Health and community partners
Santunan Emas, a mosque-based initiative, is strengthening support for seniors and caregivers through expanded community partnerships and healthcare collaborations. Building on its established weekly programmes, the initiative is being expanded across northern Singapore, bringing together mosques, healthcare providers and community partners to promote preventive healthcare, active ageing and holistic well-being. Future developments include plans to equip mosque officers and volunteers as community Health Ambassadors, helping seniors access relevant health information and appropriate support services.
Expanding support through Mosque-based programme
Santunan Emas brings together religious learning, health education and community engagement to support seniors’ overall wellbeing. As highlighted by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the National Day Rally 2026[1], the programme is expanding beyond Masjid Al-Muttaqin to four (4) additional mosques across northern Singapore: Masjid An-Nur, Masjid Assyafaah, Masjid Darul Makmur and Masjid Yusof Ishak, with activities tailored to the needs of seniors in their respective communities. Strengthening healthcare support through NHG Health Partnership
As part of the continued development of the Santunan Emas programme, MUIS and NHG Health signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today to deepen an existing collaboration in supporting the holistic well-being of seniors in the Malay-Muslim community. The MOU was signed by Ms Faizah Ahmad Barazy, Deputy Chief Executive of MUIS, and Professor Eugene Fidelis Soh, Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer (Population Health), NHG Health, with Mdm Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development and Information & Ministry of Health, witnessing the proceedings.
The collaboration builds on existing population health and community-based healthcare initiatives for the Malay/Muslim community in Central and North Singapore, including NHG Health’s Community Health Posts (CHP) at Masjid Al-Muttaqin, Masjid An-Nur, Masjid Yusof Ishak and Masjid Darul Makmur by providing health-related guidance and support in familiar community settings. Through the partnership, MUIS and NHG Health will work with participating mosques to strengthen preventive healthcare, care coordination and appropriate referrals for seniors who may benefit from additional support.
The MOU also covers training and development for mosque officers and volunteers, strengthening health literacy and care navigation, as well as exploring research to better understand seniors' needs and improve community-based support. These efforts will complement existing healthcare and social services, with clinical responsibilities remaining with appropriately qualified healthcare professionals.
Engaging the community through public forums
The sixth edition of Sembang-Sembang Santunan Emas, organised by Masjid Al-Muttaqin and Berita Harian on 31 Oct 2026, focused on grief and grief management, with a panel featuring former Mufti Ustaz Fatris Bakaram, Principal Therapist Mdm Siti Mariam Salim from Private Space Medical, and Head Nurse Mdm Halijah Jantan from NTUC Health Nursing Home (Tampines). The discussion explored the importance of emotional, social and spiritual support in helping seniors and families navigate loss. Through this collaboration, the organisers aim to raise awareness of the challenges faced by seniors and caregivers; and encourage wider conversations on ageing and well-being within the Malay-Muslim community.
Reaching seniors with different needs
Beyond supporting active seniors, Santunan Emas is also exploring ways to support seniors who are frail, homebound or receiving care in healthcare institutions. This may include collaboration with healthcare and community care partners to provide appropriate social, emotional and spiritual support for seniors and their caregivers.
Building a community where seniors can age with dignity and purpose
Ms Faizah Ahmad Barazy, Deputy Chief Executive, MUIS, said: “Santunan Emas builds on something our mosques have always provided – a sense of belonging, companionship and care for the community. As our population ages, we want seniors to continue feeling connected, valued and supported. By strengthening our programmes and partnerships, we hope to reach more seniors and caregivers, bringing meaningful activities and appropriate support closer to them. This is how our mosques can continue contributing to a community where seniors age with dignity and purpose."
Professor Eugene Fidelis Soh, Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer (Population Health), NHG Health, said: “To date, 225 residents have walked into the Community Health Post at their mosque. Behind this effort are the asatizah, mosque teams and volunteers who know their seniors, understand their faith and are part of their everyday lives. At NHG Health, we are glad to walk alongside them and bring preventive care closer to our seniors. In the spirit of gotong-royong, we will do more together."
