Understanding Our Roles And Responsibilities

  • The leadership and due respect given to the head of the household is something that has to be earned. It is not given, nor can be forced upon. As a leader has to be the role model in the family, and not one who simply orders people around. Just observe from the character of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w., and how he was with his family. It was narrated in several hadith that Rasulullah s.a.w. helped with household chores, he mended his broken sandals himself, cleaned his own house, so on so forth. This, my brothers, is the real meaning of leadership and protection, as understood and practised by Rasulullah s.a.w.
  • Being a leader in a family, does not in any way mean that men have the rights or the power to oppress women by looking down on them, dismissing their opinions, limiting their rights, and so on. If there are those among us, or among our friends and family members who still hold on to such views, then note that it is an opinion that is in no way based on the teaching and the spirit of the sunnah of Rasulullah s.a.w.
