Comparison of Good and Bad Traditions

  • When we study the life and sunnah of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w., we will realize that the Prophet s.a.w. would - at times - observe the traditions practiced by his community which do not contradict with the teachings of Islam.  Likewise, Rasulullah s.a.w. would also caution some of his companions from practicing certain cultural traditons that went against religion.

  • Interactions within the community has to be congruent with culture and religious rulings.  The underlying message from this saying echoes the principle behind our religion which permits and accepts cultural practices which do not contravene Islamic belief and its tenets.

  • A cultural tradition which contravenes religion or is inappropriate for its time, should not be upheld.  This proverb corresponds with the principles of Islam such that it rejects cultures that are in opposition Islamic texts and teachings.
