Getting Rid of a Mazmumah Trait Envy

  • Envy and jealousy will only lead to a feeling of displeasure when seeing others being blessed by Allah’s bounty. One will feel disturbed, uneasy, and often thinking of the worst of others and developing negative presumptions. There is no benefit to envy and jealousy.
  • It is normal for everyone to desire and want the best for themselves and their families. When we see others being bestowed with blessings, we will wish to have these for ourselves too. Islam acknowledges this. At the same time, Islam teaches us to overcome envy and jealousy, and to channel those feelings to something more positive and purposeful.
  • Being grateful preserves and protects our heart from envy, especially when we see our family members and friends attaining the comforts of life. This is because gratitude will give us a sense of realisation that all the affairs in this world are in the hands of Allah s.w.t.
